$115,600 OTF Grant from the Province Helps to Launch the Killarney Historical Walking Tour
Killarney, ON – On Saturday afternoon, local MPP Bill Rosenberg met with representatives from the Municipality of Killarney to formally congratulate them on the work that’s been happening since last year thanks to receiving a two-year, $115,600 Grow grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The grant has enabled the municipality to launch a historical walking tour throughout the community. The project will preserve and showcase Killarney’s rich history while enhancing tourism and community engagement.
“Congratulations on securing the Ontario Trillium Foundation Grow grant to showcase Killarney’s heritage and celebrate its rich historical legacy,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. “This initiative featuring community performances, walking tours, and interpretive signage, will be a wonderful way to engage both residents and the many visitors who are drawn to this beautiful area by land and water. As the oldest community on the northern shore of Georgian Bay, Killarney is rich in history and filled with stories. This two-year grant is a wonderful opportunity to share these stories and preserve the history for future visitors to learn and enjoy. I wish you great success as this meaningful project comes to life,” added MPP Rosenberg.
The project introduces a comprehensive historical walking tour that begins at the Killarney Museum and guides visitors along Commissioner Street and Channel Street before returning to the museum. The tour includes several physical elements such as a central kiosk board and smaller pedestal signs installed at key historical locations, each highlighting important stories and landmarks that define the community. In addition to the physical installations, the project features a digital component, including an interactive website and map that provides visitors with deeper insight into each location. Users can explore historical content, images, and detailed descriptions, creating an engaging and accessible experience for both residents and visitors. In addition, funds from the grant are also helping with some staffing costs as well.
