$200,000 Grant from the Ontario Government Gives Community Curling Club a Lift
Mindemoya, ON – On Friday, MPP Bill Rosenberg met with some of the members of the Mindemoya Curling Club to congratulate them on the work done recently, thanks to receiving a $200,000 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The grant, awarded last summer, was used to assist with the replacement of the Club’s aging ice plant. This work will help ensure a reliable, and energy efficient plant is on hand to ensure users of the curling club will be able to enjoy the sport for many years to come.
“Our government believes organizations like the Mindemoya Curling Club enrich the lives of people in Mindemoya and across Manitoulin Island, while playing an important role in building a strong and prosperous economy in Ontario. That’s why I’m proud they are receiving capital funding support,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma–Manitoulin. “The Mindemoya Curling Club is a pillar of the community, and this support will help them better serve local residents and continue making a positive difference.”
Now completed, the new ice plant from Oxford Energy Services out of Woodstock, will provide a reliable and more environmentally friendly option to ensure the Club is able to provide great ice for its members and visitors. The new plant is easily maintained, quieter and much more energy efficient than its predecessor that served the Club for the past 50 years. It will also make life a whole lot easier for its Ice Technicians to make and maintain the ice surface throughout the curling season.
“We are extremely happy with the installation and the performance of the new plant and the support from Oxford Energy Sources throughout the process,” said Greg Towns, President, Mindemoya Curling Club. “Our crew of volunteers spent just over six throughout this renovation project and to see the end result of all their efforts with this new plant and amazing ice has made it all so worthwhile. A big thank you to all of our contractors, suppliers, members and friends for helping make this happen.”
“Our hope is we have honoured those that had the foresight to build this Club in 1960. They curled on natural ice until an artificial ice plant was installed in 1976. We look forward, with the improvements made, it will last for generations to come,” added Towns.
Now that the Club is back up and running, its regular curling, curling, and stick curling activities are happening during the week. Students from Central Manitoulin Public School are back twice a week to learn the basics of curling and try their hand at throwing the curling stones and learning how to sweep them. The Club has run its first bonspiel of the season and is looking forward to hosting a Mixed Spiel on March 20th to 22nd as well as its wind-up Ladies Spiel April 10th to 12th.
