Ontario Investing More Than $475,000 in the Mindemoya Curling Club
Funding will support upgrades to the rink to ensure it remains an important community hub for residents to gather and stay active
MINDEMOYA — The Ontario government is providing $479,603 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to help the Mindemoya Curling Club replace the facility’s ice plant. As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, the province is making strategic investments to help northern communities build and revitalize recreational infrastructure for residents and visitors.
“Our government’s NOHFC investment is helping to refurbish a key social and recreational venue and boost tourism revenue in Mindemoya,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “With our support, the curling club is on its way to achieving long-term financial and operational stability.”
The Mindemoya Curling Club, a volunteer-run not-for-profit organization, is using NOHFC funding to replace its aging ice plant. To prepare for the replacement, some excavation and site preparation will occur, including the removal of a portion of an exterior wall and the pouring of a cement pad for the new plant. In addition to the replacement of the plant, the club will acquire engineering services and purchase equipment, such as new stones and a scoreboard. Upon project completion, the two-rink curling facility will be a modern, efficient and welcoming community and tourism asset for social connection and healthy living.
“Thanks to the support we received through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, the Mindemoya Curling Club has been revitalized enabling it to serve the community at large with a facility that is energy efficient, safe and able to provide top notch curling,” said Greg Towns, President of the Mindemoya Curling Club. “Our robust crew of volunteers, along with some amazing local contractors and suppliers, spent the past 6 months working to help make the improvements needed to ensure this facility is here for generations to come! Special thanks also to our NOHFC advisor, Kristin Luoma, for her guidance throughout the application process. Originally built in 1960, we hope to have honoured those original volunteers, members and carpenters in preserving what has become a mainstay of sport, exercise, and socializing for all who enter its doors.”

The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of Northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
