MEDIA RELEASE $252,700 in Provincial Grants through the Ontario Trillium Foundation help deliver cultural and recreational programs in the community
March 18, 2026
Little Current, ON: On Wednesday, MPP Bill Rosenberg was at the Artisan Centre to learn more about what’s happening in the community thanks to the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands receiving two grants in 2025, totalling $252,700, from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Both grants have enabled the Town to develop new recreational opportunities and deliver new arts programming.
“Congratulations on to the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI)securing funding for both of your Ontario Trillium Foundation projects,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. “These initiatives create welcoming spaces for people to gather, enjoy the beautiful scenery, learn about community programs in the area, and enjoy the company of friends, neighbours, and new acquaintances. These projects continue to enhance community engagement for residents, tourists, and summer residents alike, and are a wonderful addition to the area. I look forward to hearing about the successes of both programs as they evolve,” added MPP Rosenberg.
In March 2025, the first of the Town’s two OTF grants was awarded: a three-year, $235,200 Grow grant that has enabled it to expand on the frequency, availability and variety of physical activity programs that are available to local residents and visitors alike. Programs ranging from soccer, baseball, skating as well as fitness and dance classes are being expanded to provide more opportunities to maintain an active lifestyle.
“On behalf of the Town, I would like to express my appreciation to the Province and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support,” said Al MacNevin, Mayor of the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. “This funded program will encourage active living and offer opportunities for social interaction to our residents, while promoting a healthier lifestyle.”
Then last fall, the Town learned that had been successful with its application for a one-year $17,500 Seed grant from OTF. The Seed grant program was designed to help small communities and non-profits to pilot new initiatives. Thanks to the funds, free monthly arts and culture workshops will be offering, giving people in the community an opportunity to learn or build on their skills and have fun.
