Echo Bay, ON – On Tuesday, local MPP Bill Rosenburg met with Mayor Lynn Watson and representatives from the Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional to formally congratulate them on the work that’s happened since it received a $122,300 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The year-long grant was awarded last summer to upgrade the Echo Bay Sportsplex, improving accessibility, safety, and the overall user experience.
“Congratulations to the Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional on receiving the Ontario Trillium Foundation capital grant of $122,300 over twelve months for the Echo Bay Sportsplex,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. “These important upgrades to the lighting, fire and security systems, automatic door openers, PA system, and the installation of an AODA-compliant scoreboard will enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for everyone who uses the facility. Well done to everyone involved!”
This project has helped ensure the Sportsplex remains a welcoming and inclusive space where people of all abilities can take part in recreation and community events. The grant supported key upgrades at the facility, including an AODA-compliant scoreboard, energy-efficient lighting, barrier-free door operators, a public address system, and an integrated fire and security system with cameras. The Echo Bay Sportsplex is a central gathering place for residents and visitors, supporting a wide range of activities, including youth and adult sports, skating programs, tournaments, community events, markets, and concerts. These upgrades allow more people—including seniors, families, and individuals with disabilities—to fully enjoy the space.
“Over the years, I’ve seen just how important the Sportsplex is to this community—not just for recreation, but as a place where people come together,” said Mayor Watson. “These upgrades make a real difference. They improve safety, make the building easier to access, and help ensure everyone feels welcome when they come through our doors. These are practical changes that will have a lasting impact, ensuring the facility is safe, accessible, and welcoming for years to come.”
The Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional is committed to investing in recreation and creating safe, accessible, and inclusive community spaces.
